Based on our scoring system, the #1 Otterbox case is the Otterbox Otter-Pop. Unless you need a wallet folio case, which means you need the Otterbox Strada.

For the 2019 iPhones, Otterbox removed the Traction, Pursuit, Statement, Figura and Vue from their lineup. The biggest shock to us was the removal of the Otterbox Pursuit as it was a great case.

1. Otterbox otter-Pop

Pros

  • Comes with a PopSocket

cons

  • Adds a bit of bulk to the iPhone
  • PopSocket still gets caught on pockets

.

score

4.1 EH’S OUT OF 5

If handling is your biggest thing, go with the Otterbox Otter-Pop. If you don’t care what your case looks like and just want something that works, go with the Otterbox Otter-Pop. If you’re big into selfies, go with the Otterbox Otter-Pop.

If you’ve visited our website a couple of times, you know that below-average cases are the ones that get annoying to use. Cases like the Apple Clear Case fall in that category. Average cases are ones that we can stomach using daily. Exceptional cases are the ones that allow you to take your iPhone a little further.

The Otterbox Otter-Pop is that case in this list. Otterbox Otter-Pop just makes your iPhone more comfortable to use. The Otterbox Otter-Pop is essentially an Otterbox Symmetry with a hump, so you’re going to have to deal with a bit more bulk, and the PopSocket sits out slightly so it might get caught on your pant pockets.

TL:DR? The Otter-Pop lets you do more with your iPhone which is why it’s #1 in our Top 3 Otterbox Cases for the iPhone 11 list!

2. Otterbox Strada

Pros

  • Magnetic latch
  • Very Protective

cons

  • Only holds 1-2 cards
  • Bulky as a wallet case
  • Sleep button is a little tough

score

4.3 EH’S OUT OF 5

The Otterbox Strada is a tough, on-the-go wallet case. The version that we have for the iPhone 11 features slightly more used leather but other than that, Otterbox Strada hasn’t changed from the previous version.

The standout feature of the Otterbox Strada is the magnetic latch. It’s small and easy to use with one hand. And unlike the average folio case, the cover magnetically attaches on the back of the case.

And it’s this simple feature that makes us like the Otterbox Strada so much that we’ll overlook the mildly tough sleep button and the maximum 2 cards it can hold.

3. Otterbox Defender Pro

Pros

  • Everything good about the regular Otterbox Defender
  • Anti-bacterial coating

.

cons

  • Everything bad about the regular Otterbox Defender

score

4 EH’S OUT OF 5

The Otterbox Defender Pro looks almost identical to the regular Otterbox Defender, even more without the Apple logo cutout. The most significant difference between the Otterbox Defender Pro and regular Otterbox Defender is the antibacterial feature on the TPU, as well as the upgraded texture.

If, for some reason, you’ve found that the regular Otterbox Defender was too slick for your liking, then spend an extra $10 and get the Otterbox Defender Pro which has a bit more texture. But that seems really unlikely given that both cases use way too much TPU.

But it’s really those two reasons why the Otterbox Defender Pro is ranked higher than the regular Otterbox Defender.

4. Otterbox Commuter

FULL REVIEW HERE!

Pros

  • Improved design (won’t slide around easily)
  • Decent buttons
  • Handles better than the Otterbox Symmetry
  • Dust cover on Lightning port

cons

  • Bulkier than the Otterbox Symmetry
  • Dust might be an issue around the buttons

score

3.9 EH’S OUT OF 5

Otterbox went and updated the Commuter for the 2019 iPhones. There are two significant differences between the old Otterbox Commuter and the new Otterbox Commuter. First of all, the old commuter followed the shape of the iPhone, whereas the new Otterbox Commuter is much boxier. The new Otterbox Commuter looks like it would fit an oversized iPhone 4 or 5. Or the new 2020 iPhone’s if all the rumors pan out to be real.

The second difference is that Otterbox added a cutout for some of the TPU on the back. This means Otterbox Commuter doesn’t slide around as easily.

Other than that, the Otterbox Commuter is the same. The standout difference between the Otterbox Commuter and the Otterbox Symmetry is the thickness and the additional dust protection the port cover provides. But that extra dust protection is slightly offset by the fact that the edges of the case are a little loose.

5. Otterbox Defender

Pros

  • You know it’s going to protect your iPhone
  • Covers most of the iPhone
  • No plastic screen protector/no screen damage
  • Has a belt clip

cons

  • No screen protector
  • Bulky

score

3.8 EH’S OUT OF 5

We won’t admit this, but we’ve warmed up to the Otterbox Defender. It only took us seven years to because there aren’t many cases left like it anymore.

In the good old days, it was a tough case battle between the Griffin Survivor All-Terrain, Ballistic Tough Jacket, and the Otterbox Defender. The Griffin Survivor All-Terrain doesn’t exist anymore, replaced by the Griffin Survivor Extreme, which isn’t as tough.

Ballistic went out of business a couple of years ago and has made a comeback. Still, the updated Tough Jacket doesn’t have the same lovable TPU sleeve design, which leaves us with the Otterbox Defender, whose most significant change is the removal of the screen protector.

The Otterbox Defender is a known quantity. If you need a tough case that can take a beating, go with the Otterbox Defender. Otterbox uses its own Drop Standard, so we have no idea how tough it really is. But from our years of being a case reviewer, we’ve done enough awful things to iPhone’s in them to know that they will protect your iPhone. From most normal day-to-day drops.

NOTE: Between the 2018 and 2019 versions Otterbox Defender, Otterbox has removed the Apple logo cutout on the back of the case, so it’s all TPU, and your index finger loses its little home.

6. Otterbox Symmetry and 7. Otterbox Symmetry Clear

Otterbox Symmetry

Otterbox Symmetry Clear

score

3.8 EH’S OUT OF 5

score

3.8 EH’S OUT OF 5

Pros

  • Thin
  • Great buttons
  • Lots of different designs

cons

  • Slick back

The Otterbox Symmetry was reborn for the iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max. Otterbox made the case thinner by removing the shock-absorbing TPU liner on the back and greatly improved the buttons.

With the updated design, the Otterbox Symmetry went from being #150 in our list to #91. The only thing that doesn’t rank well with the case is the slick back. The back doesn’t feel stable in our hands, and that feeling gets worse with the bigger iPhones. The TPU edges on the case do offset it slightly but not enough for us to give it a higher score.

Maybe Otterbox will come up with a slight tweak as they did with the Otterbox Commuter to ensure better handling on the back of the case.

The Symmetry Clear is one of the alternatives we would look at if you’re thinking about buying Apple’s terrible clear case. It has a similar scratch-resistant PC back, which will show wear and tear a little slower than other cases. But the high gloss finish may improve the handling of the case for some people.

If you’re looking for a thin case and you’re in a big box store or whatever mobile store spawns they have, you won’t go wrong with the Otterbox Symmetry.

8. Otterbox Lumen

Pros

  • Above average handling

cons

  • Adds a bit of bulk to the iPhone

score

3.5 EH’S OUT OF 5

We know that the Otterbox Traction was dead, but we think it died and came back as the Otterbox Lumen because it shares a lot of the same characteristics. Otterbox Lumen has a full rubber edge instead of the ½ edge of the Otterbox Symmetry and the same hollow edge with ridges as well.

Otterbox Lumen is a bulky case but is a bit more manageable than the Otterbox Symmetry in one hand, but the buttons aren’t as responsive as they are on the Otterbox Symmetry. Those two reasons is why the Otterbox Lumen is #8 in our Top 3 Otterbox Cases for the iPhone 11 list.

The back of the case is raised, so unlike the Otterbox Symmetry, Otterbox Lumen won’t show wear and tear on the back as quickly.
